In the 1930s, J. Ralph Corbett, a 36-year-old lawyer from Brooklyn, came to Cincinnati as a marketing consultant for WLW Radio where he produced radio shows. During research for a radio program called “New Ideas in Business” Corbett met an inventor from Dayton, Ohio, who had developed a unique product: a musical door chime. Most homes at that time had an obnoxious door buzzer to announce visitors. Corbett knew that the public would want the new melodious door chime. In fact, he liked the idea so much he invested $50,000 in the product. Unfortunately, the product proved to be too costly and bulky.
Determined to make the idea of the door chime work, Corbett brought what was left of the company to Cincinnati in 1936 and began work on the development of a better door chime. He enlisted the aid of an acoustical engineer from the University of Cincinnati who created the first NuTone musical chime from a talcum powder can.
In the years that followed, Corbett led the fledgling company into new product development. He had recognized that the post-war American dream of owning a home would create increasing demand for built-in home convenience products. NuTone Inc. soon became a pioneer in the development of products such as bathroom exhaust fans, heaters, range hoods, central cleaning systems and decorative bath cabinets.
