LOS ANGELES -- After a record-breaking show in 2014, Dwell on Design LA returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center for its 10th annual show May 29-31, 2015. From humble beginnings in San Francisco, Dwell on Design has grown to be the largest design event in the country, hitting record attendance numbers of 31,000+ and expanding to New York in 2014. This year's event will feature three full days of onstage programming from more than 250 leaders in design, 2,000 modern furnishings and products from 400 exhibitors, and continuing education opportunities that span nearly every design discipline. From the largest Dwell Outdoor to date, covering 28,000 square feet, to the Modern Family Pavilion, where budding young designers can explore the latest in kid-friendly furnishings, an opening-day reception, and the Fort Peck - Make It Right and Monogram Modern Home prefabs, both by Method Homes, there's no shortage of spaces and products to explore on the show floor.
The growth of Dwell on Design over the past 10 years has mirrored the expansion of Dwell's offerings to its clients and readers--now 11 platforms strong. It is representative of the vision of Dwell CEO and President Michela O'Connor Abrams, who knew Dwell on Design was a show meant for the Los Angeles Convention Center and one that would propel Dwell forward when she first dreamt up the concept in the mid-2000s. "Dwell on Design embodies the magazine in its truest sense," says Dwell Editor-in-Chief Amanda Dameron, "through the innovation and creativity of our speakers, exhibitors and partners, we are able to explore the modern world in a live context. We are all thrilled to be celebrating ten years of creating an incredible show, and each year we are all driven by Michela O'Connor Abrams' vision for what a design conference can and should be."
Keynote Speaker Marcel Wanders--Dwell is pleased to announce that Dutch Designer Marcel Wanders will kick off the 10th annual Dwell on Design on Friday, May 29 as the keynote speaker. A visionary thinker and designer, Wanders often speaks to the importance of open-mindedness--charging the industry with the responsibility of bringing humanity to their work. Wanders' goal to "create an environment of love, live with passion and make our most exciting dreams come true," embodies a desire to connect, communicate and push boundaries that aligns with Dwell on Design's unconventional approach to the traditional design show. Since gaining international acclaim for his Knotted Chair in 1996, Marcel has been the creative mind behind more than 1,700 products for brands that include Alessi, KLM, Flos and design label Moooi, which he co-founded in 2001. Onstage at Dwell on Design he will share glimpses of his creative process through the trajectory of his decades-long career.
2015 Show Highlights
DODLA 2015 onstage programming will focus on four core content tracks--Design for Humankind, Smart Tech, Resiliency and Energy 360. The 5th Annual Dwell on Design Awards--This year's Dwell on Design Awards will be preceded by the "Nice Modernist" award, presented by Dwell President and CEO Michela O'Connor Abrams. This prize recognizes individuals who through design and philanthropy improve quality of life for others. The Dwell on Design Awards will by juried by respected members of the design press and honor exhibitors whose commitment and vision bring Dwell on Design to life. AIA Restaurant Design Awards--If food were all that mattered inside a successful restaurant, the ever-popular AIA/LA Restaurant Design Awards wouldn't be standing-room-only. For those interested in the aesthetics of an exemplary dining experience, award finalists will be on-hand Friday to share what's "Behind Great Restaurant Design" before they receive their accolades on Saturday. Last year's award winners included Hinoki & the Bird and the Ace Upstairs, which took home both the jury and people's choice awards in the bar/lounge category.
Re-Imagination Pavilion--The kitchen is the heart of the home, and attendees looking for design inspiration to make this space truly spectacular need look no further than the Re-Imagination Pavilion. A newcomer to the show floor, the Re-Imagination Pavilion will feature products from LG Studio, LG's premium line of kitchen appliances. Seamlessly blending best-in-class innovation with an uncompromising approach to design, LG Studio appliances deliver integrated and timeless styling. Because designing a kitchen is a daunting task, NKBA and ASID professionals will be on-hand to share expert advice on designing a kitchen that's made for you.
Dwell Outdoor Cinema--With room for about 75, the first-ever Dwell Outdoor Cinema offers attendees a place to relax in plush seating by LALO and watch architecturally significant short films selected by Dwell editors.
The Dwell Store--Making its second Dwell on Design LA appearance, the Dwell Store pop-up carries a vibrant inventory of modern designs. This year's selection will include a number of product debuts as well as items that will be seen in the U.S. for the first time. In addition to providing the furnishings onstage, the Dwell Store will welcome a few featured designers to the pop-up over the course of the weekend.
Porsche Premier Partnership--Porsche, the most timeless automotive design brand we know, joins Dwell for the first time as the premier partner of Dwell on Design LA 2015. As part of the partnership, attendees will be treated to test drives of the 2015 Cayenne--featuring the all new S E-Hyrbid, a perfect fit for the dwellers of Southern California. This partnership will also include a materials lab, curated by Dwell Editor-in-Chief Amanda Dameron, and an experiential lobby installation.
