New data from the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that almost one in four construction jobs--roughly 1.8 million--disappeared during what is now being dubbed the Great Recession, which started in December 2007. According to historical data Approximately 7,491,000 million people where employed in construction in December 2007. Preliminary figures from last month show 5,700,000 were employed in construction.
Last month, the construction sector lost an additional 75,000 positions. Non-residential specialty trade contractors took the biggest hit of all categories, with 48,111 losing employment during January.
