| Professional Builder magazine has named The Olson Co. "Builder of the Year 2000'" for its work with cities in providing ownership housing that meets state-mandated housing requirements.
The award recognizes the company's formation of partnerships with cities to address such issues as housing affordability, jobs/housing balance and proximity of housing to transportation.
The partnerships, which continue through the planning, design, entitlement and financing stages of development, focus on neighborhood revitalization; affordable "workforce" housing; urban downtown living; transit-oriented housing; and urban master planning. The company’s efforts are
being lauded as a model for "smart growth" in housing development.
"It's really an honor to be recognized as ‘Builder of the Year'; however, the cities really deserve all the credit," said Steve Olson, chairman and CEO of the company, which is based in Seal Beach, Calif. "We consider this award to be a shared honor between ourselves and our city partners."
"A major part of our success in helping more than 30 cities
and counties achieve their in-town affordable housing goals
is our ability to offer a variety of housing solutions," said
Mark Buckland, company president.
"Housing needs transcend neighborhood types. If a city has
plenty of housing for its inner-city residents, but needs a
master planned solution, or if a city needs to rebuild an
area that's proven to be an hindrance for its community
and residents, we explore strategies together to solve those problems."
