New Study: Treated Wood Producers Post Record Sales during Transition |
| 04/04/2006 |
A new analysis of the nation’s treated wood producers reveals a stable and resilient industry. In 2004, the treated wood industry posted record sales of nearly $5 billion during a challenging industry-wide transition to a new generation of preservatives.
Based on a survey of wood treating plants, 2004 sales reached $4.9 billion compared to the $3.9 billion last reported in 1996, an increase of 25% over eight years. Industry employment totaled 13,600 in 2004 with a reported payroll of $405 million for the 452 sites sampled.
Producers used more than 275 million gallons of preservatives in 2004. Waterborne preservatives totaled 55% of consumption, followed by creosote at 31%, oilborne at 12%, and fire retardants at 2%.
Mandated by a voluntary EPA agreement in 2004, the industry completed a successful transition to a new generation of advanced waterborne wood preservatives for consumer use. Advanced formulations Alkaline Copper Quat (ACQ), Copper Azole (CA), and Sodium Borates (SBX) captured a 64% share of waterborne preservatives consumed. Waterborne preservative Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA), now limited to non-consumer (industrial) applications, totaled a 35% share.
Major products treated in 2004 included 5.6 billion board feet of dimension lumber, decking, boards and timbers; 23.1 million cubic feet of piling; 17.3 million railroad crossties; and 3.9 million poles.
Louisiana State University Forest Products Development Center conducted the study at the request of leading industry trade groups. Funding was provided by Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA), Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association, Treated Wood Council, and APA – The Engineered Wood Association, with contributions of technical support and assistance from the American Wood-Preservers’ Association, Railway Tie Association, Southern Pressure Treaters’ Association, Timber Piling Council, and Western Wood Preservers Institute.

The Southern Pine Council (SPC) is a joint promotional body coordinated and supported by producing members of the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) and the Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (SLMA). Both associations represent manufacturers of Southern Pine lumber. SPC is the leading source of information about Southern Pine products for design-build professionals and consumers. Learn more at:
