| Arch Wood Protection, Inc., has acquired the Chemonite® preservative business from J. H. Baxter & Co. Chemonite is a registered trademark for ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate (ACZA), a preservative used to protect poles, piling, and timbers against wood-destroying organisms. It is an especially effective treatment for Douglas fir, and is used mainly for wood in industrial, highway, utility, and marine applications in western states. The original formulation of the preservative was developed in the 1920s.
Arch Wood Protection, Inc., has acquired EPA registrations, trademarks, licensee agreements, and supply contracts for the Chemonite brand.
"This adds another preservative to our family of wood treatments," said Grady Brafford, Senior Business Manager for Industrial Chemicals at Arch Wood Protection, "which includes CCA, Wolman® E, Dricon® fire retardant, and AntiBlu® sapstain control products. The Chemonite program extends our position in the West by opening opportunities with Douglas fir in industrial markets."
J. H. Baxter & Co., a century-old stalwart in the forest products and wood preservation industries, is based in San Mateo, Calif., with treating plants in Eugene, Ore. and Weed, Calif. The company will continue managing timberlands and manufacturing treated wood products, including piling, crossties, and glue-laminated timbers preserved with pentachlorophenol, creosote, and Chemonite ACZA.
Arch also announced that it has purchased the remaining 51 percent of its Koppers-Arch joint venture in Australia from Koppers Holdings Inc., its joint venture partner. The business produces and markets a full line of wood preservative products tailored for the wood processing and forestry industries in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands.
"The acquisition of Koppers-Arch is a key component in our international wood preservatives business expansion strategy," said Arch Chemicals' Chairman, President and CEO Michael E. Campbell. "It nicely complements our existing business and also provides excellent geographic expansion opportunities in Asia. In addition, we have a number of exciting new products, services and technology developments that we plan to introduce to China and other Australasian markets."
Headquartered in Smyrna, Georgia, Arch Wood Protection, Inc. and related affiliates are acknowledged world leaders in the development and marketing of chemical solutions that enhance the properties of wood. These businesses license the industry's best-known brands of pressure-treated wood, including Wolmanized® wood.
