ICC Evaluation Service Names New Director of Sustainability Program Development

ICC Evaluation Service® is pleased to announce that David S. Gromala has joined its staff as Director of Sustainability Program Development. "Dave's broad knowledge of building products and the needs of manufacturers will expand ICC-ES's ability to provide important services through the ICC-ES® SAVE™ Program," said ICC-ES President Mark Johnson. The SAVE (Sustainable Attributes Verification and Evaluation) Program is dedicated to verifying that building products have addressed the various sustainability guidelines that have been developed with input from industry and other interested parties.

Gromala's many years of experience in codes and standards includes an expertise in wood products, and much more recent focus on green building and sustainability standards and rating systems. His main career focus has been on the structural applications of engineered wood products. After working a short time at Sargent & Lundy Engineers, Gromala spent nearly a decade conducting research at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Products Laboratory. In 1984 he moved to the Trus Joist Corporation, which later became a division of the Weyerhaeuser Company, and in 1991 ventured out to start his own company, Gromala and Associates, a private engineering consulting firm. He returned to Weyerhaeuser in 1995 as Director of Codes and Product Acceptance, and retired in 2008.

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Gromala received a B.S. in civil engineering. He went on to earn an M.S. in structural engineering from Northwestern University. He has authored over 100 technical reports related to product standards and code compliance in the field of engineered wood products.

Gromala is active in the national standard development activities within the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the ASCE Committee on Wood and the Structural Building Components Association.
